Education
He is a graduate of Columbia College (B.A., magna cum laude, 1969), Columbia University (M.A. and Ph.D. 1973) and Yale Law School (J.D. 1977). He is a member of Phi Beta Kappa. 

Memberships
He is a member of the Connecticut Bar Association and of its Tax and Estates and Probate Sections. 

Thomas M. Divine chairs the firm’s trust and estate planning department. His areas of expertise include estate planning and administration, the tax aspects of charitable giving, elder law, and federal and Connecticut taxation. He has had extensive experience in the crafting of sophisticated estate plans for individuals having substantial assets. Mr. Divine has counseled owners of family businesses with respect to transitions of management, the structuring of pensions and other employee benefits, the uses of insurance in corporate and tax planning, and the structuring of redemptions and cross purchases of business interests. 

Experience
Before entering private practice, Mr. Divine clerked for Judge J. Joseph Smith of the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit (1977-78). He represents tax exempt organizations and has structured a variety of private (charitable) foundations. Mr. Divine has lectured on tax and estate planning subjects before local and regional audiences. He is admitted to the Bars of the State of Connecticut (1978), the U.S. Tax Court (1980) and the Commonwealth of Massachusetts (1984). He is the author of “Women in the Academy: Sex Discrimination in University Faculty Hiring and Promotion,” 5 Journal of Law and Education 429, 1976.
